It is the series' first traditional home console installment since
, and also the first Donkey Kong Country entry not to involve
    during the development.

    [
    ] Plot

Under the hypnotic control of a group of evil
known as the Tiki Tak Tribe,
the animals on DK Island have stolen
bananas, forcing him to retrieve the hoard with the help of
    .
The different types of Tikis will fill the role of the antagonists this time, replacing the
, which will not appear in the game.
, who owns shops throughout the island, is the only
that will appear in addition to Donkey and Diddy.

    [
    ] Gameplay

    and
ride a barrel. Returns combines 2D gameplay with some 3D graphics like character models and this mine cart in the foreground.

    Players take control of
    and Diddy Kong,
with many traditional elements of the Donkey Kong Country series returning, including mine cart levels, swinging from vine to vine, collecting bananas, and the golden "KONG" letters.
There will also be levels with the characters and foreground environments appearing as
, spawning several new gameplay mechanics.
In single player, players can only play as Donkey Kong whilst multiplayer mode enables a second player to simultaneously control Diddy Kong.
If one player dies in two player mode, he can be brought back by hitting a DK Barrel that floats into view, similar to
. To avoid problems arising from differences in player skills, Diddy can hop on Donkey's back to take on a more passive role, while his jetpack can be used to make some of his partner's jumps easier.
As in past games, Donkey can pound the ground to defeat enemies and unveil secret items, as can Diddy.
The game will have two control schemes, with the standard system using the
    in conjunction with the
, as well as a more classical approach employing the
held sideways, both of which use motion controls for the ground pound move.
In addition to common series elements like secrets and unlockables, there will also be a
    mode.
    At least two
, Rambi and Squawks, have been confirmed to appear in the game.
The game will also utilise the Super Guide feature that has appeared in
    and
. If the player loses 8 lives in a single level, they will be given the option to allow Super Kong to take over and complete the level for them. However, any collectibles obtained whilst Super Kong is playing will not be counted towards the total.

    [
    ] Development

Development on Donkey Kong Country Returns started in April 2008, just after some of the key personnel of
    had left the company.
    At that time,
wanted to create a new Donkey Kong game and, at his request, producer Kensuke Tanabe recommended Michael Kelbaugh, the CEO of Retro Studios, who had previously worked on the Donkey Kong Country series while he was employed at Nintendo of America.
Satoru Iwata frequently referred to this turn of events as "fate" in his meetings with Retro Studios, which is why Kelbaugh suggested the homophonous project codename F8.

    Similar to
, the game was developed with the intention to invoke nostalgic feelings in the player with its art style and sound, while trying to provide them with new gameplay experiences.
Though Miyamoto initially opposed the idea, simultaneous two-player gameplay was implemented, contrary to the tag-team system of the original series.
    First unveiled at
    , the game employs fully-polygonal
with levels containing three times the amount of
    and
    that
    offered in a single room.
Over the course of six months, two thirds of the game's tools and engine had to be rewritten by the programmers, the
    and
systems being subject to the most changes.
Retro Studios made some experiments with underwater levels, though they were ultimately omitted as they felt too slow and unfitting to the overall gameplay.

    [
    ] Reception

Donkey Kong Country Returns has gotten highly positive reviews from critics so far.
awarded the game a score of 9.0/10 and an Editor's Choice award saying "This is an incredibly challenging, old-school throwback that might not set the genre afire with innovation, but in my book, it's better than the awesome game that inspired it." One of IGN's closing comments of the game was "Rare should be proud that its design is in the right hands. Or just insanely jealous. Either works."
awarded the game a score of 9.5/10 (as well as naming it Game of the Month for the December 2010 issue), with the reviewer hailing it as "one of the best platformers I've ever played."
gave the game 8/10, praising it for standout levels and fan service whilst criticising it for some unfair levels and waggle controls which make the game more frustrating.
gave the game 4 out of 5 stars saying, "Retro recaptures most of Donkey Kong's venerated platforming roots in this fine
    sequel."
GameXplain awarded the game 5 out of 5 stars for both single player and co-op. GameXplain called it "one of the best platformes in the last 10 years."
gave the game a score of 9.0, praising its gameplay and diversity of the levels.

True, and it's a real shame, because it's a great console with some of the best games of the generation.

just not much response to the post, although that might be more down to DF rather than the Wii community as a whole...

ah I see, I think games like this tend to miss the general public but the people that do pick them up love them. I had the platformer you played on the bongos for the GC and I loved it, probably one of my favourite games of all time so Im keen to give this a whirl.

The team who are rare now has virtually no members that would have worked on the original games.

This game looks superb, going to pull it down shortly.

In terms of graphics and such, the PS3 is superb - but the gameplay of Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii and Super Mario Bros Wii is pretty hard to beat.

The graphics on this are outstanding considering the hardware. There is a level early on at dusk which is amazing visually. It's one of those games you play and can't help but smile.

i remember seeing the snes game and thinking it was using some advanced version of the SFX chip and all the rendering was real time

This game only uses the remote though, no drums or original controller options. it works great on the remote in classic style anyway.
