With soldiers and armies there is War Commander, Act of War: Direct Action + its expansion called High Treason, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes and Shattered Union.

I couldn't say which is best because just like in foods or drinks, de gustibus non est disputandum. I hope you'll find one that suits your needs and serves as a fix for C&C.

I also loved Red Alert: Command & Conquer, the game from 1996. Used to play if for hours. Crap, now I want it again. I hope it works of Windows 8.1.

I see a few people mentioned ElastoMania in this topic.

In my opinion Trials 2 SE or any other trial game can't be compared with EM. Because ElastoMania is not a trials game.

Plus, now there is a cool free version called EOL (ElastoMania OnLine) where you can play against many users around the world, you can see them in real time, chat and everything.
Beside battles (flag tag, apple battle, regular, first finish, one wheel, drunk battle, multiplayer battle etc.) there are even various cups and World Cups from time to time.
There are multiple styles of levels too: pipe, downhill, uphill, loopy, flat, headbanger, hangs etc. each being driven in a different way and with a different set of skills.
Control is easy, you only need 6 keys.

I think it's amazing and I found no game I could compare with it.

The graphics, well... the game is 2D. You can check it on youtube. Not much for graphics, but you can play lots of levels created by others and you can create your own levs.
You can see great plays, amazing skills and challenging battles.

I've been playing this game from 2006 as a newbie until 2010 when I joined EOL and since then I played almost every day, learning new stuff and improving my skills. I think I will never have enough of this game. There are more than 100000 external levs to be played, besides the 53 internal levs and all challenge you to beat the greatest ElastoMania players in the world.

Nah, just my opinion of a (great) game.

I'm using Avast for a couple of years now. Never had any infections and with the proper settings (which are easily made btw) it runs smoothly in the background protecting everything.

I use Bullzip PDF Printer. Free and effective.
